Methodology

How we measure the results we publish.

A number only means something if you know how it was worked out. Here are the formulas, sources and limits behind every figure on our results page and in your dashboard.

Every figure, and how it's worked out.

  1. 01.Starting point.

On the day a business starts with us, we record its public Google review count and star rating. Every later figure is compared with that snapshot, never with an estimate.

  2. 02.Why we pool growth.

If one business starts with 4 reviews and gets 20, that's +500%. Averaging that with other businesses would make the headline look much bigger than it is.

So the combined figure adds up all new reviews and divides by all starting reviews. A business with very few reviews at the start can't inflate it.

  3. 03.Google Maps positions.

Results change with where the searcher is standing, what they type and when. Every position we publish states the search term, the place it was checked from and the date. Your own phone may show something different, and positions can change from one day to the next.

  4. 04.Clicks are not reviews.

When a customer taps through to Google, we count it as a click, not a review. A review only counts as confirmed when a matching new review appears on your profile. Survey ratings are reported separately and never mixed in with Google ratings.

  5. 05.Staff figures.

Staff rankings use survey ratings from customers whose booking named that staff member. Nobody is ranked until they have at least five ratings. A Google review is linked to a staff member only when it names exactly one person on the team.

  6. 06.What the figures don't show.

Results depend on how many customers you serve, your sector and how people respond. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and reviews are only one part of prominence. Past results don't guarantee future ones, and we never promise a number of reviews or a ranking.

  7. 07.See it applied.

Read the client figures on our results page, or estimate your own with the review calculator. The calculator gives a rough estimate, not a forecast.
